Gooseneck and Fifth Wheel

Fifth Wheel and Gooseneck Trailers are similar in that they are both designed to transfer a substantial amount of the weight of the trailer to the tow vehicle. (Tongue Weight) Unlike a regular hitch in which the weight of the trailer is carried at the very back of the tow vehicle limiting the amount the hitch can carry before the steering and stability of the tow vehicle is affected, a Gooseneck or Fifth Wheel allows the tongue weight to be carried much further forward, either over the rear axle or slightly forward of it.

The design of a Gooseneck or Fifth Wheel limits the installation to vehicles that have an open body above the rear axle like a pick up truck without a canopy or a custom built tow truck. They have the advantage of allowing the tow truck to pull a very large trailer without impacting the stability of the trailer or the tow truck.
