Class I Hitch |

Class III Hitch |

Class VI Hitch |
Ball and Tongue hitches come in different classes depending on the tongue weight (the weight the hitch has to carry) and the draw weight (the weight the hitch has to pull).
Before you can select a hitch, you have to know what you intend to pull with it. Except for the Class VI and above hitches, the hitches look similar in design. Some hitches are designed to be barely visible when the hitch tongue is removed, hidden hitches, others stick out a little further. The differences in the classes of hitch relate not so much to differences in design, as they do to the thickness of steel used to make them. As the Class Number goes up, the hitches become more heavy duty, are made from heavier gauge steel, are more difficult to conceal, and weigh more.
